An Egyptian filmmaker and screenwriter, Radwan Al-Kashef was one of the most prominent figures in Egyptian realistic cinema, blending harsh realism with magical realism in his films.

🎥 Film Career

Al-Kashef started his career with his graduation project film "Al-Ganoubeya" (The Southern Woman) before moving on to feature films. He directed three major films that left a strong mark on Egyptian cinema:

 

⭐ Notable Films:

🎭 Leh Ya Banafseg (1992) – A deep exploration of youth life in poor neighborhoods, winning several awards.

🌿 Arak El-Balah (1999) – One of his most poetic and profound films, described as "an eternal masterpiece."

🧙‍♂️ Al-Saher (The Magician) (2001) – Starring Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, depicting the life of a street magician.

Besides directing, Al-Kashef authored two books on philosophy and political thought:

🏛 Political Activism & Arrests

Participated in the January 1977 Uprising (Bread Riots), which led to accusations of inciting protests.

Arrested in September 1981 during Anwar Sadat’s mass arrests of intellectuals.

⚰ Death

After attending the Rotterdam Film Festival, where Al-Saher (The Magician) was screened, he suffered a sudden heart attack.

His funeral took place at Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque in Cairo on June 5, 2002.

🎭 Cinematic Legacy

Radwan Al-Kashef is considered one of the second-generation realists in Egyptian cinema, alongside Osama Fawzi, Sayed Said, and Yousry Nasrallah. They carried on the legacy of realism established by Khairy Beshara, Mohamed Khan, Daoud Abdel-Sayed, and Atef El-Tayeb.
