Egyptian actress Laila Elwi commemorated the anniversary of the passing of renowned screenwriter Waheed Hamed through her official Instagram account, sharing an emotional message that reflected her deep respect for his artistic and moral legacy.

In her post, Elwi described Hamed as “a great writer and a conscience that never fades,” emphasizing the lasting impact he left on both hearts and creative works.

Waheed Hamed was born in 1944 in Egypt’s Sharqia Governorate and moved to Cairo at a young age, where he began a remarkable writing career that spanned decades and reshaped the landscape of Arab cinema and television.

Throughout his career, Hamed delivered influential works that became cultural landmarks, including The Dancer and the Politician, Terrorism and Kebab, The Forgotten, Birds of Darkness, Blood of the Ghazal, and El-Gama’a, among many others.

Known for his bold storytelling, Waheed Hamed consistently addressed sensitive and complex societal issues, often opening discussions that many avoided. One of his most controversial and impactful works was the film The Innocent.

Released in 1986 and directed by Atef El-Tayeb, The Innocent starred Ahmed Zaki and told the story of a simple rural man who becomes part of a repressive system without fully understanding its consequences.

Hamed once explained that the film aimed to expose the most dangerous form of oppression—one carried out by individuals who believe they are fulfilling a patriotic duty. He also noted that altering the original ending upon release weakened the film’s deeper moral message, before the full version was later restored in special screenings.
