But behind the laughter and the stage lights, there was a sensitive soul who loved deeply—so deeply that his affection for dogs moved him to tears twice, a detail rarely highlighted in the story of this theatrical giant.

🎭 From School Theater to the Leader of Egyptian Stage

El-Rihani was born in Bab al-Sha’riya, Cairo, to an Iraqi Chaldean father. His passion for poetry and theater emerged early, and he later worked in Upper Egypt, which influenced the themes of his plays and films. His experiences between Cairo and the countryside shaped his view of Egyptian society, making his work deeply rooted in reality.

Before El-Rihani, Egyptian theater relied heavily on European adaptations. But alongside his lifelong friend Badi’ Khairy, he introduced a new era: Egyptian plays, Egyptian language, and Egyptian social critique—delivered through comedy and satire.

A woman named Lucy de Fernay gifted him a German dog named Bido. When Bido died, El-Rihani was devastated. The loss was so intense that he closed the theater on the day of Bido’s death and couldn’t perform.

🐾 “Dek Al-‘Adhab”… The Brazilian Giant

In 1923, during a trip to Brazil, a friend gifted him a large farm dog, which he named Dek. The dog became famous for attacking other dogs near the theater, earning him the nickname “Dek Al-‘Adhab” (The Biting Dek).
