Exclusive
Competent investigative authorities have initiated proceedings in Case No. 15926 of 2025 involving a defendant who works in online sales and advertising. The case concerns allegations of creating and managing electronic and banking accounts allegedly connected to cryptocurrency-related activities and transactions involving USDT through the Binance platform, in addition to alleged operation of cryptocurrency trading activities without the required legal authorization.
Attorney Ahmed Bashir El-Ghazawy has undertaken the defense of the defendant, who categorically denies the allegations against him. According to the defense, the defendant's professional activity is focused on online advertising and clothing sales, while his dealings involving digital currency were allegedly related to advertising requirements rather than investment or conducting unlicensed cryptocurrency trading activities.
Details of the Seized Items in the Binance Case
According to the investigation records, authorities seized a number of items from the defendant that are currently subject to examination and investigation. The seized items reportedly included EGP 13,500 placed inside an envelope, a mobile phone, and a number of mobile SIM cards associated with telecommunications companies, in addition to 62 bank cards kept inside a white envelope.
The investigation records also referred to the seizure of 27 red envelopes associated with a telecommunications company, along with 9 SIM cards belonging to one company and 4 SIM cards belonging to another. The defendant reportedly acknowledged ownership of the items he was questioned about during the investigation.
The seized items are being examined by the competent authorities to determine their nature, purpose, and any potential connection to the allegations under investigation, as part of the ongoing process of collecting technical evidence and relevant information.
Defendant Denies Cryptocurrency Trading Allegations
During questioning, the defendant categorically denied the allegations against him, including claims that he created or managed electronic accounts for the purpose of committing cryptocurrency-related offenses, as well as allegations of trading or promoting digital currencies without authorization.
According to his statements, the defendant's primary source of income comes from online sales and advertising, with an estimated average monthly income of approximately EGP 10,000.
He also stated that he has three electronic wallets used to collect payments from customers, while denying that these wallets were established or used for any criminal activity.
Why Did the Defendant Use Binance?
Regarding his dealings with Binance, the defendant maintained before the investigative authorities that his use of the platform was not intended for cryptocurrency investment or promotion. Instead, he stated that his transactions were related to obtaining USDT for the purpose of financing online advertising campaigns.
The defendant further denied engaging in organized cryptocurrency trading activities or providing cryptocurrency-related services to third parties in violation of the law, maintaining that his transactions were connected to his work in the field of digital advertising.
Attorney Ahmed Bashir El-Ghazawy's Defense
Attorney Ahmed Bashir El-Ghazawy, representing the defendant, confirmed that his client categorically denies the allegations concerning the management of electronic accounts for the purpose of committing cryptocurrency-related offenses.
El-Ghazawy explained that his client works in online advertising and clothing sales, with a monthly income of approximately EGP 10,000. He also has three electronic wallets that, according to the defense, are used to collect payments from customers as part of his professional activities.
The defense added that the defendant's dealings with Binance were, according to his account, intended to obtain USDT needed to finance advertising campaigns, rather than to invest in digital currencies or engage in unauthorized cryptocurrency promotion or trading.
The defense further emphasized the importance of distinguishing between merely using an online platform or possessing digital assets and establishing that an individual actually engaged in organized commercial cryptocurrency trading or promotional activities in violation of applicable law. The defense stressed that criminal liability ultimately depends on the findings of the ongoing investigations and the technical examination of the evidence and seized items.
62 Bank Cards and Mobile SIM Cards Under Examination
The seized items, particularly the 62 bank cards and multiple mobile SIM cards, are among the key elements currently being examined to determine their purpose and whether they have any connection to the facts under investigation.
The defense maintained that mere possession of these items, or acknowledging ownership of them, does not in itself establish that they were used in any unlawful activity. According to the defense, their legal significance must be determined based on the purpose for which they were used and whether there is evidence establishing their actual connection to the alleged offenses.
Investigations Continue to Determine the Nature of the Transactions
The competent authorities continue to conduct investigations into the case, including the examination of electronic accounts, financial data, devices, and other seized items, as well as reviewing the nature of the financial and electronic transactions allegedly associated with the defendant.
The results of the technical examination, investigations, and evidence-gathering procedures are expected to help determine whether any connection exists between the electronic and banking accounts under examination and the allegations at issue, before the appropriate legal measures are taken.
The defense team, led by Attorney Ahmed Bashir El-Ghazawy, maintains that the allegations against the defendant have not been established and that his use of Binance was related to his online advertising activities rather than criminal cryptocurrency activity.
All allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial review, and no criminal responsibility is established unless supported by the evidence and procedures recognized under applicable law.
