The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, represented by the General Authority for Veterinary Services, announced the completion of the renovation and development of eight slaughterhouses across five different governorates. This is part of a comprehensive plan aimed at facilitating citizens’ access and reducing the phenomenon of random slaughtering, which negatively impacts public health and the environment

Intensive Efforts Under Ministry Leadership
Dr. Hamid Al-Aqnass, Chairman of the General Authority for Veterinary Services, affirmed that these achievements align with the directives of Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk and under the supervision of Deputy Minister Engineer Mostafa El-Sayyad. The focus was on enhancing the efficiency of slaughterhouses by equipping them with trained veterinary medical staff, alongside ongoing awareness campaigns to encourage slaughtering within official slaughterhouses, to safeguard citizens’ health and the environment.
Al-Aqnass explained that these developments complement the decisions by the Ministry of Local Development, aiming to organize and modernize government slaughterhouses to ensure the provision of distinguished and integrated services.

Trial Operation of Red Sea Slaughterhouses Ahead of Opening
Trial operations were conducted at the slaughterhouses in Ras Ghareb and Safaga in the Red Sea governorate, attended by representatives from the Ministry of Local Development, Veterinary Services, and the supervising company, in preparation for their official opening during the upcoming Eid al-Adha. This effort is part of improving infrastructure and reducing slaughtering outside official facilities.
Additionally, the semi-automated slaughterhouse in Al-Arish, North Sinai, has been upgraded to a higher operational standard to provide excellent services.

Development of Major Slaughterhouses in Various Governorates
Al-Aqnass mentioned the completion of the Ibrahimia slaughterhouse renovation in Sharqia governorate, with a capacity of up to 2,000 heads per year. It is equipped with two slaughter halls and modern facilities that ensure high-quality service.
In Alexandria, three main slaughterhouses were prepared: the automated slaughterhouse in Al-Amreya with a slaughtering capacity of up to 1,000 sheep per hour, along with the Abu Qir and Faculty of Agriculture slaughterhouses in Abis. All are equipped with large refrigerators to safely store meat.
Also, the development of the Shepshir Al-Hissa slaughterhouse has been completed, which will replace the Tanta slaughterhouse as part of a comprehensive slaughterhouse modernization plan across various governorates.
Strict Inspection Campaigns to Regulate Markets and Ensure Meat Safety
In a related context, veterinary directorates carried out extensive inspection campaigns on butcher shops, frozen food outlets, and restaurants, resulting in the seizure of quantities of meat and poultry unfit for consumption. This included meat slaughtered outside official slaughterhouses, unknown-source liver and minced meat, as well as spoiled fish.
Official reports were filed, and the seized items were referred to the public prosecution. Authorities emphasized the continuation of daily market monitoring to combat random slaughtering and to ensure the provision of meat that meets health standards, along with monitoring the readiness of slaughterhouses in terms of hygiene tools, water supply, and official slaughter stamping.
