The Egyptian Tax Authority has officially denied rumors suggesting an increase in the value-added tax (VAT) on cigarettes, stating that no new amendments have been made to the existing tax regulations.

A spokesperson for the authority clarified that the government is currently prioritizing price stability for essential goods and is not introducing any additional financial burdens on citizens. The VAT on tobacco products remains governed by Law No. 67 of 2016, which outlines the applicable tax rates.

The official emphasized that any tax changes must go through proper legal and governmental channels, with decisions announced formally by the Cabinet of Ministers, not through speculation or social media rumors.

The statement also highlighted the government's commitment to market stability, monitoring tobacco producers and distributors to ensure adherence to official pricing set by the Consumer Protection Agency and the Ministry of Finance.

Furthermore, inspection campaigns will continue to prevent unjustified price hikes or manipulation, maintaining a balance between tax revenue collection and consumer protection.
