Public Business Sector Targets 2,500 New Hotel Rooms and a Comprehensive Plan to Complete Textile Factory Development by Next April

Engineer Mohamed Shimi, Minister of Public Business Sector, unveiled a bold strategy adopted by the ministry to boost investments in both the tourism and industrial sectors in the upcoming period. This initiative comes within the broader efforts by the Egyptian state to revitalize the economy and enhance the performance of affiliated companies.

During a press briefing, the minister stated that the ministry aims to establish around 2,500 new hotel rooms over the next three years, with 600 rooms planned for completion within the first year alone. The plan is part of a broader effort to expand Egypt’s hotel infrastructure and meet growing tourism demands.

He confirmed that the strategy not only focuses on increasing room capacity but also includes launching entirely new hotel projects. One notable example is the historic Shepheard Hotel, which is currently undergoing extensive renovations to restore its former glory. Additionally, the ministry plans to invest in new hotels and expand existing ones in strategic locations to boost both domestic and international tourism.

Short-Staple Cotton: Reduction, Not Elimination — Growing Role for the Private Sector

Addressing reporters' questions on short-staple cotton cultivation, Shimi clarified that the ministry has not cancelled short-staple cotton farming, but rather scaled it down to better align with actual market needs and to maximize economic efficiency in resource utilization.

He noted that the cost of growing short-staple cotton is nearly equal to the cost of importing it, prompting the ministry to encourage private sector involvement to ensure sustainable production. Most public textile factories rely primarily on long-staple cotton, which continues to be a key raw material for the local industry.

Textile Industry Overhaul: Countdown Begins for Egypt’s Largest Industrial Upgrade

In one of the ministry’s most ambitious projects to date, Shimi confirmed that the comprehensive development of textile and garment factories — including production lines and support facilities — is on track to be completed by April 2026.

He emphasized that this project represents the largest industrial overhaul in Egypt’s modern history, with total investments ranging between EGP 60 to 70 billion. The initiative includes modernizing factory infrastructure, introducing state-of-the-art production lines, and training the workforce to meet international standards, significantly enhancing the global competitiveness of Egyptian products.

The minister also stressed that the next phase of the project will focus heavily on marketing and distribution strategies, aiming to ensure sustainable financial returns that cover operational costs and support long-term growth. The ministry is working to create an integrated model that combines high-quality manufacturing with effective promotion, both locally and internationally.

He concluded by reaffirming that the Ministry of Public Business Sector follows a comprehensive vision aimed at optimizing the use of public assets, whether through direct development or via strategic partnerships with the private sector, ensuring service quality and sustainable economic returns.
