Urgent Compensation from Telecom Companies After Ramses Central Office Fire
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority obliges companies to compensate users affected by the Ramses Central Office fire.
The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has mandated all telecom companies operating in the Egyptian market to take immediate steps to compensate users affected by service outages or disruptions caused by the fire that broke out at the Ramses Central Office. The incident impacted various telecommunications services, including mobile and fixed internet.
In an official statement issued today, the NTRA emphasized that this decision comes as part of its ongoing monitoring of the technical outage and its commitment to protecting users’ rights and minimizing the impact of this unexpected event on customer experience.
As part of the compensation measures, the NTRA has announced that mobile service users will receive 1 GB of free data, while fixed internet users will be granted 10 GB of additional data added to their monthly packages. In cases of severe disruption to fixed services, affected users will be compensated with 5 GB of free mobile data as an alternative.
The Authority stressed its continued monitoring of network performance and efforts to improve service quality. It also confirmed that additional measures are underway to prevent similar disruptions in the future, including a review of emergency plans and enhanced readiness of the telecommunications infrastructure.
Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, noted that the fire had indeed affected several telecom services, such as voice calls, data transmission, digital payments, and money transfers. However, a complete service blackout was avoided thanks to the early activation of emergency plans.
He explained that Ramses Central Office is one of the core nodes in the national telecom network infrastructure. However, the existence of other central offices in various regions allowed for quick absorption of the incident's impact.
Talaat added that once it became clear the Ramses Central Office couldn’t return to operation in a short time, Plan C was activated, which involved the full transfer of digital services to alternative central offices. Initially, Plan B was implemented, which partially rerouted certain services.
He reaffirmed that the Ministry and the NTRA are working in full coordination to ensure service stability and achieve the highest operational efficiency, while fully upholding citizens' rights to reliable and secure telecommunications services.
