AI That Listens to the Body at Night: A New Model Predicts Diseases from One Night of Sleep
From silent breaths to hidden heartbeats, a groundbreaking AI model can now predict future disease risks using data from a single night’s sleep.
In a remarkable scientific breakthrough, researchers have developed an advanced artificial intelligence model capable of predicting the risk of developing more than 100 diseases based solely on physiological data collected during one night of sleep.
The model, known as SleepFM, analyzes deep sleep signals such as brain activity, heart rate, breathing patterns, muscle movement, and eye motion, transforming nighttime rest into a powerful window into future health.
SleepFM was trained on nearly 600,000 hours of sleep data gathered from over 65,000 individuals, using polysomnography — the gold standard in sleep monitoring and one of the richest yet underutilized sources of medical data.
The model learns what researchers describe as the “language of sleep,” breaking data into short time segments, much like words in large language models, allowing it to detect complex relationships between multiple physiological signals.
After demonstrating strong performance in traditional sleep-analysis tasks, including sleep-stage classification and sleep apnea assessment, the model advanced to a more ambitious goal: predicting long-term health outcomes.
By linking sleep data with decades-long medical records, SleepFM successfully identified 130 disease categories that could be predicted with notable accuracy, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, mental health disorders, and pregnancy-related complications.
The AI showed exceptional accuracy in predicting conditions such as:
-
Parkinson’s disease
-
Dementia
-
Heart attacks
-
Hypertension-related heart disease
-
Breast and prostate cancer
-
Mortality risk
Researchers believe this innovation could mark a turning point in preventive medicine, where sleep becomes an early warning system—quietly revealing health risks long before symptoms arise.
Regular health screening is one of the most important steps to maintain good health and detect diseases early. The essential medical checkups for every age help in preventing complications and ensuring a healthier life.
Many people, after doing medical tests, receive their results and immediately start looking at numbers and unfamiliar terms like (High – Low – Normal) without fully understanding what they actually mean.
When dealing with medical services, many people come across different titles for doctors such as “Specialist” and “Consultant”, which can sometimes create confusion about what each title actually means and how they differ from each other.
Choosing the right time to visit a doctor is not a random decision. It can directly affect how quickly a condition is diagnosed and how effective the treatment will be. Many people delay visiting a doctor or go at the wrong time, which may lead to worsening symptoms or delayed care.
