New Blood Test Sparks Debate: Are Scientists Closer to Diagnosing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
UK researchers claim 96% accuracy in diagnosing ME with a new blood test — but experts urge caution, calling for more independent validation.
In what could be a medical breakthrough, researchers at the University of East Anglia, in collaboration with Oxford Biodynamics, have announced the development of the world's first blood test capable of diagnosing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME) with 96% accuracy. The announcement, however, has stirred both excitement and skepticism in the scientific community.
Published in the journal Translational Medicine, the study utilized an advanced genetic profiling technique known as EpiSwitch 3D Genomics, analyzing blood samples from 47 ME patients and 61 healthy individuals. Researchers identified distinct genetic patterns associated with the condition, potentially paving the way for faster and more accurate diagnosis.
However, several experts have urged caution, citing the small sample size and the lack of comparison with similar conditions like depression or fibromyalgia. Dr. Charles Shepherd from the ME Association noted that while the findings are promising, they are not yet ready for clinical application.
An estimated 400,000 people in the UK and over 30 million worldwide suffer from ME — a debilitating illness characterized by severe fatigue, muscle and joint pain, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairment. Women between the ages of 25 and 50 are most commonly affected.
Despite concerns, researchers remain hopeful that this discovery could lead to improved diagnostics and treatments, and may even shed light on similar post-viral conditions like Long COVID.
