British health authorities have culled over 10,000 chickens after an outbreak of avian influenza at a commercial poultry site near Penrith, Cumbria, as part of urgent measures to contain the virus. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs confirmed that the culling process is carried out humanely to minimize suffering among infected birds.

A two-mile (3 km) protection zone has been established around the infected site, requiring farmers to house all poultry and captive birds safely. Additionally, a six-mile (10 km) surveillance zone has been imposed to monitor for any further infections. The department noted previous cases near Windermere in September, highlighting the seriousness of avian influenza in northern England.

Meanwhile, Iraq reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain, causing the death of 12,000 birds in Bashiqa. Neighboring Iran also reported new infections of the same strain this month, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Global authorities emphasize the importance of strict monitoring due to the virus’s significant impact on livestock and the food chain.

These measures highlight the need for strict preventive actions in poultry farms, including biosecurity practices, facility disinfection, and monitoring for symptoms, to protect food production and prevent disease spread among animals and humans alike.
