Cinnamon is a globally popular spice, used to enhance the flavor of dishes and desserts, and is known for health benefits such as boosting immunity, improving digestion, and regulating blood sugar.
However, recent studies indicate that excessive cinnamon intake may put the liver at risk and increase the chance of cirrhosis due to the coumarin compound present in cinnamon.

Cinnamon is mainly divided into two types:

  • Cassia Cinnamon: Common and inexpensive, with higher coumarin content.

  • Ceylon Cinnamon: Less common, finer in flavor, and contains lower levels of coumarin.

According to the World Food Organization, the safe daily intake should not exceed 0.1 mg per kg of body weight, considering individual weight and health to avoid liver inflammation or irritation.

High-risk groups include individuals with prior liver issues, hepatitis, elevated liver enzymes, those taking high-dose cinnamon supplements, pregnant women, and children.

For safe cinnamon use:

  • Choose Ceylon cinnamon.

  • Limit intake to one teaspoon per day.

  • Avoid relying on cinnamon as a main component of your diet without consulting a doctor.

  • Avoid cinnamon supplements without prior medical advice.
