A recent study has revealed a surprising potential benefit of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, such as Ozempic, suggesting they may help reduce chronic migraine attacks and emergency room visits.
Originally developed for type 2 diabetes and weight management, GLP-1 medications have recently drawn attention for additional health benefits, including cardiovascular protection and possible neurological effects.
What Did the Study Find?
The research, set to be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting in April 2026, analyzed medical records of approximately 22,000 individuals diagnosed with chronic migraine.
Participants were divided into two groups:

One group began using GLP-1 medications for conditions like diabetes.

The other group received topiramate, a commonly prescribed preventive migraine medication.
Results showed that patients using GLP-1 drugs were 10% less likely to visit the emergency department within a year and 14% less likely to be hospitalized for any cause compared to those on topiramate. They were also less likely to initiate a new preventive migraine therapy during follow-up.
Is It a Proven Treatment?
Researchers emphasized that the study was observational, meaning it shows statistical association rather than direct causation.
Chronic migraine often overlaps with metabolic and inflammatory conditions such as obesity and insulin resistance, which may explain the potential benefit. However, important factors like weight loss amount, migraine severity, and lifestyle changes were not measured.
Further clinical trials are needed to confirm whether GLP-1 medications could become part of migraine treatment strategies.
