A recent study warns that e-cigarettes may be as harmful as traditional smoking, affecting heart, blood flow, and brain health.

A new study from Manchester Metropolitan University has raised concerns that e-cigarettes may pose long-term health risks comparable to regular cigarettes, and in some cases worse due to continuous usage and ease of access.

Dr. Maxim Boidan, a cardiac rehabilitation expert and lead researcher, found that e-cigarette users show similar damage to smokers, including stiffened arteries, impaired blood flow, and increased risk of heart disease, organ failure, and cognitive decline. The harm is linked to inflammation caused by nicotine, metals, and chemicals in e-liquids, such as propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and artificial flavorings.

Boidan emphasized that the continuous use of e-cigarettes makes it harder to track intake, increasing exposure to harmful substances, particularly among young people. Vascular stress tests revealed comparable arterial wall damage in both smokers and e-cigarette users, indicating long-term cardiovascular risks.

The study also noted reduced cerebral blood flow, raising concerns about cognitive function and dementia risk. It recommends stricter regulations on e-cigarette sales, including refillable devices, to limit youth access and reduce long-term health hazards.
