Ethiopia Reports Deadly Marburg Outbreak: Nine Cases Confirmed
A dangerous outbreak of the Marburg virus emerges in southern Ethiopia, prompting rapid action from global health authorities.
Health officials in Ethiopia have confirmed nine cases of the deadly Marburg virus in the Omo region, raising international concern due to the virus’s extremely high fatality rate, which can reach up to 88%. The World Health Organization has launched an urgent response to prevent further spread across East Africa.
Marburg, a highly virulent hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola, spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. The virus was first identified in 1967 in Germany and Serbia after laboratory workers were exposed to infected monkeys imported from Uganda.
Over the years, more than 15 outbreaks have been documented, with recent cases reported in Rwanda and Tanzania in 2022, resulting in over 25 deaths. Despite ongoing vaccine trials, no approved treatment or vaccine currently exists, and medical care focuses solely on managing symptoms and improving survival chances.
Initial infection often results from exposure to caves and mines inhabited by fruit bats. Human-to-human transmission occurs through blood, secretions, and other bodily fluids. Symptoms begin suddenly with fever, severe headache, diarrhea, and muscle pain, before rapidly progressing to intense bleeding from multiple areas of the body.
The WHO confirmed it is coordinating with Ethiopian authorities to implement urgent containment measures, including tracing all contacts for 21 days, strengthening infection-control practices, and educating communities about key prevention steps such as avoiding contact with infected individuals, using protective equipment, and thoroughly cooking meat.
