Giant Hornets Kill Father and Son in Laos After More Than 100 Stings During Adventure Trip
A tragic incident in Laos claimed the lives of an American man and his teenage son after they were attacked by a swarm of giant Asian hornets during a vacation adventure, suffering over 100 deadly stings.
A devastating tragedy occurred in Luang Prabang, Laos, where Daniel Owen (47), an American school director in Vietnam, and his 15-year-old son, Cooper, lost their lives after being attacked by a swarm of giant Asian hornets while enjoying an eco-adventure zipline trip near the Mekong River.
According to The Times, the father and son were descending from a tree with a local guide when the hornets suddenly attacked. The insects, among the largest in the world, stung them over 100 times, leaving their bodies covered in red welts and severe swelling.
Dr. Phanomsay Vakan, who treated them at Vakan Arokavit Clinic, described the situation as “extremely severe and unprecedented,” noting that despite being conscious when admitted and showing no immediate signs of anaphylactic shock, both victims passed away within hours.
The giant Asian hornet, measuring up to two inches long, delivers a potent venom that causes intense pain, allergic reactions, and can be fatal in high doses or multiple stings.
The adventure park where the incident occurred described it as a natural, unforeseeable tragedy, emphasizing cooperation with authorities and reinforcing safety measures to protect future visitors.
