Arthur Brooks, professor at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School — widely known as a happiness expert — has shared a six-step morning routine that he says transformed his life, helping him feel more focused, energized, and balanced every day.

Brooks calls it “from five to nine before your nine to five,” emphasizing the importance of using the early morning hours to build mental and physical balance before work begins.

The six steps to a productive morning:

  1. Wake up early — around 4:30 AM 🌅
    Waking before sunrise clears the mind and boosts creativity.

  2. Exercise for one hour 🏋️‍♂️
    Light cardio and resistance training energize both the body and the brain.

  3. Meditation or spiritual reflection 🧘‍♂️

  4. Delay your coffee
    Waiting an hour after waking enhances caffeine’s effect and prolongs alertness.

  5. High-protein breakfast 🍳
    A balanced meal with Greek yogurt, berries, nuts, and whey protein stabilizes mood and energy.

  6. Four hours of deep work
    From 8 AM to noon, Brooks dedicates time to intense focus — achieving two days’ worth of progress in half the time.

According to Brooks, sticking to this routine for a few weeks can dramatically improve energy, mood, and overall life satisfaction.
