Many people struggle with intense cravings for sweets, especially while dieting. Nutritionist Bouja Machiga suggests a simple yet effective trick: brush your teeth whenever a strong urge for sugar appears.
Machiga explains that sugar cravings are often linked to brain signaling, where sugar intake triggers dopamine, creating a reward loop: cue ← routine ← reward. Brushing your teeth disrupts this loop. Menthol in toothpaste stimulates cold receptors (TRPM8), making sweet flavors taste unusual, metallic, or bitter, reducing the desire for sugary foods.
This trick is particularly helpful for those craving sweets after dinner, out of boredom, or when short on time. However, it is not a substitute for a balanced diet or addressing physiological causes of sugar cravings such as low protein intake or sleep disturbances.
