A new study shows that just 10 minutes of daily exercise can slow bowel cancer growth and promote DNA repair, with short workouts triggering rapid molecular changes in the blood that combat tumor development.
A recent study found that 10 minutes of daily exercise can halt the growth of bowel cancer and accelerate DNA repair. Researchers noted that even brief exercise sessions produce rapid molecular changes in the blood that help prevent tumor progression.
Conducted at Newcastle University, the study analyzed blood samples from 30 overweight or obese but otherwise healthy men. Samples were collected before and after a 10-12 minute cycling session, then exposed to bowel cancer cells in the lab.
Results revealed that intensive exercise increased the concentration of 13 proteins in the blood, linked to reduced inflammation, improved vascular function, and metabolism. When applied to bowel cancer cells, these exercise-induced proteins altered the cancer's genetic profile, enhancing genes involved in DNA repair and energy production, while halting cell growth.
Bowel cancer affects over 44,000 people annually in the UK, ranking as the fourth most common cancer, with rising cases among younger adults. The study emphasizes that regular physical activity, even for short periods, may reduce mortality risk or even help prevent the disease.
