A recent clinical study has revealed that listening to specially designed music for just 24 minutes can significantly reduce anxiety symptoms, especially when combined with auditory beat stimulation (ABS), a technique designed to influence brain activity.
The study involved 144 adults experiencing moderate anxiety, all of whom were already on medication. This allowed researchers to explore whether music could provide additional relief alongside traditional treatments and determine the most effective listening duration.
Participants were divided into four groups, each exposed to different audio conditions, including pink noise as a control and music with ABS for durations of 12, 24, and 36 minutes. Anxiety and mood levels were assessed before and after each session.
Results showed that music enhanced with ABS was notably effective in reducing both cognitive and physical symptoms of anxiety, such as racing thoughts, lack of focus, nausea, and discomfort.
Notably, the 24-minute session delivered the most balanced and effective outcome. It matched the benefits of the 36-minute session while outperforming the shorter 12-minute session, suggesting an optimal listening duration for maximum impact.
Researchers believe these findings highlight the potential of music as a simple, low-cost tool for managing anxiety, especially given the limitations of conventional treatments like medication and therapy.
