According to mental health experts, this condition is known as “phone phobia,” a subtype of social anxiety involving fear of making or receiving calls. Psychiatrist Dr. Divya Shri KR explains that this issue is increasingly common, especially among young people who find digital communication more comfortable and less stressful than real-time conversations.
Phone phobia is more than mild discomfort; it carries distinct symptoms such as tension, sweating, increased heart rate before or during calls, avoiding or delaying answering, overthinking what to say, and feeling exhausted afterward. The condition can significantly affect daily communication and emotional well-being.
The causes vary, including fear of judgment, making mistakes, or not responding quickly enough, lack of practice with voice conversations, and previous negative call experiences. The rise of digital communication plays a major role as well, making instant verbal interactions seem more intimidating. To manage phone phobia, Dr. Divya suggests starting gradually and building confidence, beginning with short calls to close friends or family, preparing notes before important calls, practicing deep breathing, and slowly increasing call duration. She also advises focusing on the purpose of the call rather than potential mistakes, reducing excessive reliance on texting, and incorporating more voice or video calls.
