Every year, hundreds of patients in Egypt undergo stem cell transplants, seeking a cure for serious diseases. However, post-transplant recovery often comes with complex challenges, most notably chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), affecting 30% to 70% of patients depending on donor compatibility. It can impact the skin, eyes, lungs, liver, and joints.
Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the National Cancer Institute – Cairo University explained: “cGVHD occurs when donor cells attack the recipient’s body. Accurate diagnosis requires careful monitoring and specialized medical expertise after the transplant.”
Survivors’ stories, like that of Anwar El Kamouny, a former professional Egyptian tennis player, show that recovery is possible despite challenges: “After developing a chronic immune condition post-transplant, I returned to professional sports, proving that hope is not just an idea but a decision.”
Experts stress that raising awareness about cGVHD is crucial to educate patients, expand access to advanced treatments, and ensure healthcare support throughout recovery to maintain quality of life.
