What Is Bone Marrow Donation?
Bone marrow is a soft, spongy tissue found inside certain bones and is responsible for producing blood cells. During donation, blood-forming stem cells are collected and transplanted into a patient to restore normal blood production.
How Does Bone Marrow Donation Work?
There are three main donation methods:
1- Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Donation (PBSC)
This is the most common method. Blood is drawn from the donor, stem cells are separated using a specialized machine, and the remaining blood is returned. The process takes 3–4 hours and requires no anesthesia.
2- Bone Marrow Harvest from the Pelvic Bone
Performed under general anesthesia, stem cells are extracted directly from the pelvic bone. The procedure lasts about two hours, with a short recovery period.
3- Umbilical Cord Blood Donation
Stem cells are collected from the umbilical cord after childbirth with no risk to the mother or newborn and stored for future transplants.

Successful transplantation depends on matching human leukocyte antigens (HLA) between donor and recipient. Higher compatibility significantly increases transplant success and reduces complications.
