Health experts have raised serious concerns that certain chemicals found in hand sanitizers could increase the risk of cancer, leading the European Union to consider a potential ban. Researchers warn that frequent or long-term use of alcohol-based sanitizers containing ethanol might expose users to harmful substances.

While global health agencies recommend sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol for hygiene and infection control, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) recently classified ethanol as a possible carcinogen. The agency’s Biocidal Products Committee is set to meet soon, and the European Commission will make the final decision on whether to restrict or replace ethanol.

Ethanol’s risk mainly comes from the production of acetaldehyde, a toxic chemical that can damage DNA and increase the likelihood of developing cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, intestines, and breast. Over time, this buildup may contribute to severe health consequences, especially with excessive sanitizer use.

However, the World Health Organization maintains that ethanol is safe for hand hygiene when used properly, noting that common issues are limited to skin irritation or accidental ingestion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still recommend washing hands with soap and water whenever possible as the most effective and safest method.

Experts advise the following precautions:

Choose approved sanitizers with safe ingredients.

Check official “do not use” product lists regularly.

Keep sanitizers out of children’s reach.

Prefer soap and water when available.

These findings serve as a reminder that hygiene must always balance cleanliness with chemical safety, ensuring products are both effective and scientifically verified.
