Massive Study Reveals Genetic Link Between Cholesterol Levels and Reduced Dementia Risk
A new large-scale study involving over one million people found that naturally low cholesterol levels, influenced by certain genes, may significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia.
In one of the largest genetic studies ever conducted, researchers from the University of Bristol and University of Copenhagen discovered that specific genetic variations that naturally lower cholesterol are linked to a reduced risk of dementia.
Led by Dr. Liv Tybjaerg Nordestgaard, the research analyzed data from more than one million participants across Denmark, England, and Finland — marking a milestone in understanding the relationship between cholesterol metabolism and brain health.
Genetics and Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs
Some individuals are born with genetic variants that affect the same proteins targeted by cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins and ezetimibe. These genetic factors help maintain low cholesterol levels, which may offer long-term protection against dementia.
To assess this connection, the team used a genetic analysis method known as Mendelian Randomization, allowing them to simulate the effects of cholesterol-lowering drugs while minimizing the influence of external factors like diet or lifestyle.
Study Findings
The findings revealed that lowering blood cholesterol by 1 mmol/L was associated with up to an 80% reduction in dementia risk when certain genetic variants were present.
According to Dr. Nordestgaard:
“Our study suggests that individuals with naturally lower cholesterol due to genetic factors have a substantially lower risk of developing dementia.”
These results highlight that maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, whether genetically or medically, may play a key role in preventing age-related cognitive disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
However, researchers cautioned that the study does not provide definitive proof that cholesterol-lowering medications directly prevent dementia but emphasizes the importance of cholesterol management for brain health.
