Bangladesh is facing a severe measles outbreak that has led to the deaths of over 100 children in a short period, alongside thousands of reported cases, raising alarms among global health experts.

This outbreak is considered one of the worst in recent years, with hundreds of confirmed infections and thousands of suspected cases recorded within weeks, signaling a rapidly escalating public health crisis.

Experts point to declining vaccination rates as the primary cause, as many children have missed essential immunization doses, leaving them vulnerable and weakening community immunity.

Disruptions in vaccination programs have further worsened the situation, with delays in routine immunization campaigns, limited vaccine supplies, and restricted healthcare access in high-risk areas contributing to the spread.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases, spreading easily through airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing. It can infect a large percentage of unvaccinated individuals upon exposure, making containment especially difficult.

Early symptoms typically include high fever lasting several days, followed by cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Small spots may appear inside the mouth before a widespread skin rash develops.

In severe cases, complications such as pneumonia or brain inflammation can occur, potentially leading to death, particularly among malnourished or immunocompromised children.

This crisis highlights the urgent need to strengthen vaccination programs and raise awareness to prevent the resurgence of preventable infectious diseases.
