Namibia Reports Monkeypox Outbreak and Activates Emergency Measures
Namibia’s Ministry of Health has confirmed a monkeypox outbreak in Swakopmund and activated response teams, while WHO urges continued vigilance despite declining global cases.
Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services announced on Sunday the detection of a monkeypox (Mpox) outbreak in the coastal city of Swakopmund, confirming that surveillance and contact-tracing teams have been mobilized to contain the spread.
The news comes shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that monkeypox no longer constitutes a global health emergency, following a notable drop in infections across several African nations.
In August 2024, the WHO had raised the highest health alert level when a new strain of the virus, known as Ib, began spreading from the Democratic Republic of Congo to neighboring countries. However, recent months have seen a steady decline in reported cases across Congo, Burundi, Sierra Leone, and Uganda.
Professor Demi Oguina, a member of the WHO Emergency Committee, emphasized that lifting the emergency status does not mean the risk has disappeared. “We must continue international cooperation and investment in prevention,” he stated.
Monkeypox is a viral disease that spreads primarily through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials. Symptoms include fever, headache, rash, and pus-filled lesions, and while most cases are mild, children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals remain at higher risk of severe complications.
Health authorities in Namibia continue to monitor the situation closely and urge citizens to maintain hygiene practices and report any suspected infections promptly.
