A recent study has uncovered promising results indicating that eating a moderate daily portion of roasted, unsalted peanuts could significantly benefit the brain health of older adults. Participants who consumed peanuts regularly experienced improved blood flow to key regions of the brain, slight enhancements in memory performance, and a noticeable reduction in blood pressure levels.

Researchers highlighted that peanuts may offer an affordable and accessible way to support cognitive health with aging. The study, conducted at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands, suggests that peanuts could help strengthen memory and cognitive signaling thanks to their rich nutritional profile.

The research focused on the crucial role of brain microvessels, which tend to lose efficiency with age, leading to reduced oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain cells. This reduction is often associated with memory problems and may contribute to cognitive decline and dementia. Given that diet is one of the easiest lifestyle factors to modify, scientists continue to explore foods capable of protecting brain blood vessels, with peanuts emerging as a strong candidate.

Although peanuts are classified as legumes, their nutritional characteristics closely resemble those of nuts. They are rich in proteins, fiber, healthy fats, and plant-based compounds essential for overall health. The study examined peanuts with their skin, which contains high levels of polyphenols such as resveratrol—an antioxidant known for its protective properties. Peanuts also provide a substantial amount of L-arginine, an amino acid that promotes the production of nitric oxide, a molecule responsible for relaxing blood vessels and maintaining healthy blood flow.
