Scientists Discover New Method to Treat Kidney Diseases
A U.S. research team has found a potential way to reverse acute kidney injury in mice by blocking harmful ceramide molecules, offering new hope for future kidney therapies.

AKI often results from severe physical stress, such as sepsis or major surgery, and can increase the risk of long-term chronic kidney disease.
The study demonstrated that genetically altering ceramide production or treating mice with the candidate drug fully protected kidney function and preserved mitochondrial efficiency under stress. However, researchers caution that the drug remains in preclinical stages and has not been tested on humans, requiring further studies to confirm safety and effectiveness.
