الحرمان من النوم وخطورته على القلب والمناعة والدماغ

In today’s world, chronic sleep deprivation is increasingly common due to work pressure, late-night activities, stress, and continuous smartphone use. Experts sometimes call it the “new smoking,” as it can have long-term effects on the heart, brain, immune system, and mental health.

Dr. Pooja Belai, an internal medicine consultant, explains that sleep is not just a rest period—it’s when the body performs vital functions such as tissue repair, hormone regulation, memory processing, and immune system strengthening. Sleeping less than six hours a night disrupts these essential processes.

How sleep deprivation affects the body:

  • Heart and circulation: Increases risk of hypertension, heart disease, and strokes.

  • Metabolism and weight: Raises hunger hormones and lowers metabolism, leading to weight gain and cravings for high-calorie foods.

  • Immune system: Reduces immunity, slows recovery, and increases susceptibility to infections and chronic inflammation.

  • Mental health: Causes anxiety, depression, irritability, poor concentration, and prolonged sleep deprivation may impair memory and contribute to dementia.

Hidden daily risks:

  • Reduced focus and higher risk of accidents.

  • Lower daily productivity and energy.

  • Hormonal imbalance affecting fertility and general health.

Dr. Belai warns that sleep deprivation damages the body gradually, and most people don’t notice until serious health issues appear. Experts recommend 7–8 hours of quality sleep per night, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, avoiding smartphone use before bedtime, exercising regularly, and following a healthy diet.
