Sleeping In on Weekends Boosts Teen Mental Health, Study Finds

New research reveals that catching up on sleep during weekends can significantly reduce depression symptoms among teenagers and young adults.

A recent scientific study has revealed that sleeping longer on weekends may play a vital role in improving mental health among teenagers and young adults.

The research, conducted by Oregon University and New York Medical University, found that individuals aged 16 to 24 who compensated for weekday sleep deprivation by sleeping more on weekends were 41% less likely to experience symptoms of depression.

Researchers highlighted that adolescence is a critical stage marked by chronic sleep deprivation due to academic pressure, social life, extracurricular activities, and part-time work, making regular sleep schedules difficult to maintain.

While sleep specialists recommend 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night, the study acknowledged that this goal is often unrealistic for many teens. As a result, weekend catch-up sleep may serve as a protective factor against mental health challenges.

Melinda Casement, director of the Sleep Lab at Oregon University, explained that biological changes during adolescence naturally shift sleep cycles toward later hours, making it harder for teens to fall asleep early during school nights.

The study analyzed national health data collected between 2021 and 2023, examining sleep patterns and emotional well-being, reinforcing the strong link between sleep duration and mental health outcomes in young people.
