A large-scale, long-term study has unveiled unexpected findings indicating that consuming specific high-fat foods, particularly full-fat cheese and cream, may be associated with a reduced risk of dementia, challenging long-standing nutritional beliefs.

Spanning 25 years and tracking the health and dietary habits of more than 27,000 adults, the research found that individuals who regularly consumed at least 50 grams of full-fat cheese daily, along with around 20 grams of full-fat cream, showed a noticeably lower risk of developing dementia compared to those with lower intake levels.

Researchers noted that high-fat cheeses such as cheddar, brie, and gouda—containing over 20% fat—as well as cream products with fat content ranging between 30% and 40%, demonstrated a potential protective association with brain health. In contrast, low-fat dairy products, including reduced-fat cheese, milk, and yogurt, did not show similar benefits.

The findings also highlighted a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease in particular among participants who consumed higher amounts of full-fat cheese, especially those without certain genetic risk factors commonly linked to dementia.

Participants, aged between 45 and 73 at the start of the study in the 1990s, underwent detailed dietary questionnaires, blood tests, and health interviews, with their medical outcomes tracked through national health records until the end of 2020.

Despite the promising results, researchers emphasized that the study identifies an association rather than direct causation, cautioning against overgeneralization or replacing balanced dietary choices with unhealthy, high-saturated-fat foods such as fatty red meats, which have been linked to increased dementia risk.

Interestingly, regular consumers of full-fat cheese and cream also tended to have lower body mass index levels and reduced rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke, along with less reliance on cholesterol-lowering medications—adding further depth to the ongoing debate about dietary fats and long-term cognitive health.
