A recent study conducted by Danish researchers has found that painkillers commonly prescribed to millions of patients are largely ineffective in treating chronic pain and may even pose significant health risks.

After analyzing the medical records of over 6,500 patients, the researchers concluded that opioid painkillers provide only short-term relief, while their long-term use is associated with increased risks of heart disease and severe side effects such as nausea, dizziness, constipation, and drowsiness.

The study reviewed 19 clinical trials investigating the use of painkillers for various chronic pain conditions, including back pain, arthritis, and nerve pain. The findings showed that opioids should be used sparingly and only for short durations, as prolonged use can lead to addiction and worsen a patient’s overall condition.

Experts also warned that patients awaiting treatment for extended periods often rely heavily on painkillers, which can exacerbate their health issues. In particular, tramadol was found to double the risk of cardiovascular problems compared to placebo users, with minimal actual pain relief.

The researchers urged the medical community to explore safer, more sustainable pain management approaches—such as physical therapy and behavioral interventions—that can help control pain without the long-term harm caused by opioids.
