Study Finds Instant Coffee Linked to Higher Risk of Vision-Loss Disease
New research reveals a strong link between instant coffee consumption and age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness worldwide.
A recent scientific study has found a significant connection between drinking instant coffee and the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) — the leading cause of blindness in the UK and globally. The disease progressively damages central vision, making everyday tasks like reading and driving increasingly difficult.
According to The Daily Mail, there are two types of AMD: dry and wet. The dry form accounts for about 90% of cases and occurs when tiny protein deposits build up on the macula — the part of the retina responsible for sharp vision. The wet type, however, results from the growth of abnormal blood vessels behind the eye, leading to retinal damage and vision loss.
Researchers noted that genetic factors play a major role in susceptibility to AMD. Individuals carrying specific genetic markers who consumed instant coffee more frequently — about two cups daily or more — faced a significantly higher risk. Those increasing intake to four cups per day were found to be seven times more likely to develop the condition.
The study, conducted by a research team at Hubei University in China, analyzed data from over half a million people across the UK and Finland, including genetic profiles, coffee consumption habits, and health records. The findings confirmed a strong genetic correlation between instant coffee intake and dry AMD.
Experts now recommend reducing instant coffee consumption as a precautionary measure, especially for individuals with a family history or genetic predisposition to macular degeneration.
