Study: Kiwi and Mineral Water Offer Natural Relief from Chronic Constipation
New research suggests that kiwi and mineral water may help improve bowel movements and ease symptoms of chronic constipation.
A recent study by King’s College London has revealed that regularly consuming kiwi, along with mineral water, may offer a natural and effective approach to managing chronic constipation—a condition affecting one in every ten individuals and often impacting daily quality of life.
The study explains that constipation is typically diagnosed when bowel movements drop below three times per week or when intestinal motility decreases from a person’s usual pattern. Researchers highlighted that patients often report up to 30 different symptoms, reflecting how widely constipation can affect digestive health.
According to the findings, eating two to three kiwis a day provides a beneficial amount of fiber that promotes bowel movement, increases stool volume, and boosts water content, making it softer and easier to pass. Kiwi is also rich in vitamin C and potassium, offering added benefits for immunity and blood pressure regulation. Similar improvements can be achieved through prunes and rye bread.
The research also emphasized the advantages of mineral water due to its magnesium content, which acts as a natural laxative. Results show that magnesium oxide supplements can help reduce abdominal discomfort, relieve bloating, and improve bowel movement, making them a viable option within updated nutritional guidelines for managing constipation.
Nutrition experts welcomed these findings, noting that food-based guidance provides a promising path for patients seeking to manage constipation without heavy reliance on medication. The British Nutrition Foundation described the recommendations as evidence-based support for improving digestive health in individuals suffering from chronic constipation.
