Study: Men Must Double Exercise Time to Gain Same Heart Benefits as Women
A new study finds that men need twice as much exercise as women to achieve similar cardiovascular benefits and reduce the risk of heart disease.
A recent scientific study has revealed striking differences between men and women when it comes to the heart benefits of physical exercise. Researchers found that men must work out nearly twice as long as women to achieve the same level of protection against heart disease.
The analysis, which included data from over 80,000 participants, showed that women who exercised for 150 minutes per week reduced their risk of coronary heart disease by 22%, while men saw only a 17% reduction for the same amount of exercise.
When the duration increased to 250 minutes, women lowered their risk by 30%, but men needed more than 530 minutes of exercise weekly to reach similar benefits.
Experts attribute this difference to biological factors — particularly the protective role of estrogen in women — which helps improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and balance cholesterol levels.
Researchers emphasize that general exercise recommendations should consider these gender differences, while reminding men that regular physical activity remains essential for strengthening the heart, improving overall fitness, and reducing early mortality rates.
