A recent study highlighted potential side effects of popular weight loss drugs targeting GLP-1 receptors, including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, showing they may raise the risk of osteoporosis and gout.
The five-year large-scale study observed a slight increase in bone density issues and gout risk among users, prompting doctors to stress careful monitoring and adherence to a balanced diet while taking these medications.
Although these drugs have gained popularity for weight loss and blood sugar control, they carry unexpected and serious risks, including various forms of arthritis, osteoporosis, and gout.
Mounjaro, which combines GLP-1 and GIP, may lead to approximately 10% greater weight loss than Ozempic, which contains only GLP-1, along with improved HbA1C levels. However, neither drug is FDA-approved specifically for weight loss, and individual responses may vary.
Researchers also noted cases of tendon injuries after minor trauma in some patients, prompting investigation into GLP-1’s broader impact on bones and connective tissues. Despite the benefits, accelerated weight loss induced by these drugs may indirectly increase the risk of bone fragility, underscoring the need for medical oversight.
