A recent study conducted by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine has found that obesity may significantly speed up the progression of Alzheimer’s-related biomarkers. According to the findings, these biomarkers rose up to 95% faster in participants with obesity compared to individuals with a healthy body weight. The study analyzed five years of data from 407 participants enrolled in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, including PET scans and blood samples, to explore the connection between body mass index (BMI) and disease development.

Initially, higher BMI appeared to be associated with lower levels of Alzheimer’s biomarkers in blood tests, not due to reduced risk but because individuals with higher body weight typically have larger blood volumes, resulting in diluted biomarker concentrations. However, long-term monitoring revealed a consistent rise in disease burden among those with obesity, including increased accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain—a hallmark of the most common form of Alzheimer’s.

Researchers noted that blood-based biomarkers showed remarkable sensitivity, detecting subtle changes in disease progression even more clearly than brain imaging in some cases. Lead researcher Dr. Soheil Mohammadi emphasized that the five-year data showed a steady link between obesity and increased Alzheimer’s-related pathology, while Dr. Cyrus Raji highlighted that brain health is deeply influenced by overall physical health, making weight management an essential factor in long-term cognitive protection.

Despite its compelling results, the study has limitations, including the fact that not all types of body fat carry the same level of risk, and BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass nor indicate fat distribution in the body. The relatively small and specific sample may also limit generalization. Additionally, the observational nature of the study identifies associations but cannot definitively prove that obesity directly causes accelerated Alzheimer’s progression.
