Health specialists have issued strong warnings regarding the consumption of pufferfish, also known as the blowfish, due to its highly toxic nature and potential to cause severe health complications, including death.
The fish contains a dangerous neurotoxin known as tetrodotoxin, which directly affects the nervous system. Exposure to this toxin can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness, seizures, and paralysis of the respiratory muscles, potentially resulting in respiratory failure in severe cases.
The toxin is concentrated in specific parts of the fish, including the liver and reproductive organs, making its preparation extremely risky without specialized expertise. In some cultures, only highly trained chefs are permitted to handle and prepare it safely.
Warnings also indicate that the danger is not limited to ingestion. Divers may be at risk if the fish inflates and its spines penetrate the skin during close contact, allowing the toxin to enter the bloodstream and cause symptoms within hours.
Medical treatment for such poisoning requires immediate intensive care, including respiratory support and continuous monitoring of vital signs, as there is currently no specific antidote available for this toxin.
Experts emphasize the importance of extreme caution and avoiding any handling or consumption of this fish without proper expertise, particularly in coastal regions where it may be encountered.
