The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a new alert for individuals using weight loss injections, advising anyone who experiences severe allergic reactions to GLP-1 drugs to report them immediately. The warning comes amid widespread use of these injections for managing diabetes and supporting weight loss, though they may carry certain health risks.
According to the UK government health website, GLP-1 drugs (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) mimic a naturally occurring hormone secreted in the intestines after eating, signaling the pancreas to release insulin and help transfer sugar from the blood into cells for energy. These drugs also act on the brain to reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying, keeping the body feeling full longer, which aids weight loss and blood sugar regulation.
The alert covers medications including Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, and Mounjaro, some of which are FDA-approved for weight loss in individuals with overweight or obesity, even without diabetes. However, doses for weight management are usually higher than those for diabetes treatment, potentially increasing the risk of side effects.
Regarding acute pancreatitis, medical reports indicate that a few GLP-1 injection users developed this condition, though current evidence does not show a direct causal link, and such cases were rare in clinical trials. The MHRA stressed the importance of reporting any side effects, including pancreatitis or allergic reactions, to help researchers enhance the safety of these medications in the future.
