A recent British study found that weight loss drugs containing the hormone GLP-1 may help reduce serious complications in heart attack patients. The research indicates that these drugs protect heart tissue from damage, a problem affecting nearly half of the patients treated for heart attacks annually in the UK, approximately 100,000 people.
The link between weight loss drugs and heart attacks:
These medications are known for lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes. However, this study highlights their potential to treat common post-heart attack complications. Dr. Svetlana Mastitskaya, the lead author, noted that the findings are promising and could allow paramedics to administer these drugs directly to heart attack patients.
The “no-reflow” phenomenon:
Around half of heart attack cases experience blockage in the small blood vessels even after the main artery is cleared, causing “no-reflow,” where blood cannot reach certain heart tissues. This condition increases the risk of death or readmission within a year. Animal studies suggest GLP-1 drugs may prevent this issue, though human studies are needed for confirmation.
The study was funded by the British Heart Foundation and included experts from University College London, published in Nature Communications. The research indicates that simulating GLP-1 activity may improve microvascular blood flow, offering hope for future use in heart attack treatments, pending detailed clinical trials.
