According to Dr. Crystal Wyllie from Zava Clinic in London, this shift in appetite is a natural biological response as the body seeks extra energy to maintain its internal temperature.

Dr. Wyllie explains that reduced exposure to sunlight during winter lowers levels of serotonin and dopamine, the key neurotransmitters responsible for mood regulation and energy. This decline often leads to fatigue, sleepiness, and in some cases, seasonal affective disorder. To compensate, the body turns to carbohydrates—found in foods like pasta, bread, and chocolate—which quickly boost serotonin levels and improve mood.

Hormones further influence winter appetite. Limited physical activity and disrupted sleep patterns can increase ghrelin, the hormone responsible for stimulating hunger, while decreasing leptin, the hormone that signals fullness. As a result, people tend to eat more without feeling satisfied.

Dr. Wyllie notes that this pattern is part of the body's survival mechanism, designed to adapt to cold and darkness. However, it may lead some individuals to consume food excessively. She also stresses that weight-loss medications are not suitable for addressing seasonal cravings and are reserved only for severe cases of obesity.

Recent online trends reveal a surge in searches for ways to control winter hunger, reflecting a growing awareness of how cold weather affects appetite.

Experts recommend several scientific strategies to manage these cravings, including incorporating spicy foods like ginger and chili to boost metabolism, consuming fiber-rich foods such as oats, lentils, apples, and chia seeds to prolong fullness, and choosing dark chocolate, whose bitter compounds help reduce appetite—and even its aroma can aid in curbing cravings.
