With the onset of winter, the risk of respiratory virus infections rises among both children and adults. Vulnerable groups, including infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic conditions, are at higher risk. Currently circulating viruses include seasonal influenza, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and the common cold.

The spread of these viruses is amplified in winter due to cold temperatures weakening immunity, prolonged survival of viruses on surfaces, poor ventilation in indoor spaces, and close contact in crowded settings such as schools, public transport, and workplaces.

Common respiratory viruses

  • Influenza: Causes fever, body aches, cough, and fatigue, with potential complications for older adults.

  • COVID-19: Continues to circulate in waves, with symptoms similar to flu but potentially causing breathing difficulties and loss of smell.

  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV): Dangerous for infants and the elderly, leading to severe airway infections.

  • Common cold: Highly prevalent in children, causing nasal congestion and mild cough.

How to protect yourself

  1. Seasonal vaccines: Annual flu shot, COVID-19 vaccine for eligible individuals, and RSV vaccine for infants, seniors, and late-term pregnant women.

  2. Ventilate indoor spaces: Open windows, use fans, and avoid poorly ventilated crowded areas.

  3. Wear masks when needed: When experiencing cold symptoms, in hospitals, or when in contact with vulnerable individuals.

  4. Maintain hygiene: Wash hands for at least 20 seconds, use alcohol-based sanitizer, and cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

  5. Boost immunity: Get sufficient sleep, drink warm fluids, consume fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals, and avoid smoking.

When to stay home

Isolation is recommended in cases of high fever, severe cough, difficulty breathing, or extreme fatigue to prevent spreading infection, especially to children and the elderly.

Groups most at risk of complications

  • Pregnant women

  • Seniors over 65

  • Infants

  • People with chronic illnesses (heart disease, diabetes, asthma, immune disorders)

  • Lung patients and heavy smokers
