Blogger Hadir Abdel Razek Sentenced to One Year in Prison for Indecent Content
The case of blogger Hadir Abdel Razek sparks debate after an Egyptian court upholds a one-year prison sentence for publishing indecent content. A legal expert explains the long-term impact on her criminal record.
The controversy surrounding Egyptian blogger Hadir Abdel Razek has reignited discussions about the boundaries of online expression after a court upheld her one-year prison sentence for posting indecent videos and promoting immoral behavior.
Lawyer Mahmoud El-Semary, a cassation attorney, stated that the case represents a clear violation of public morality laws, emphasizing that such offenses are classified as crimes of indecency and dishonor, and their impact extends beyond the prison term itself.
According to El-Semary, the charges against the blogger included:
-
Publishing indecent videos on social media.
-
Inciting immorality and debauchery.
-
Violating family and social values.
He clarified that cases of this kind are typically handled by the Economic Court under Egypt’s Cybercrime Law, in addition to articles from the Penal Code that criminalize actions violating public decency.
Regarding the criminal record implications, El-Semary confirmed that a final conviction results in the offense being recorded permanently on the individual’s criminal history, under categories such as incitement to immorality or publication of indecent content.
He added that such records can have serious long-term consequences, especially when applying for jobs or dealing with official institutions, as they are legally regarded as crimes affecting honor and integrity.
