The Public Prosecution of Egypt, led by Attorney General Mohamed Shawky, has ordered the release of 38 detainees held in pretrial detention in cases investigated by the Supreme State Security Prosecution, in line with the Attorney General’s directives to periodically review the legal status of all pretrial detainees across the nation.
The decision, issued on Monday, October 6, 2025, reflects the prosecution’s commitment to comprehensive justice, which not only ensures accountability for crimes but also supports the rehabilitation and reintegration of released individuals into society, emphasizing Egypt’s ongoing efforts to uphold human rights and dignity.
In a related context, the Official Gazette published Presidential Decree No. 565 of 2025, dated October 5, 2025, granting a pardon for the remainder of sentences for certain prisoners on the occasion of Egypt’s Armed Forces Day, celebrated on October 6.
The decree includes:
First: Life-sentenced inmates who have served at least fifteen years by October 6, 2025, to be placed under police supervision for five years, according to Article 75 of the Penal Code.
Second: Prisoners who have served one-third of their sentence by that date, provided they have served at least four months in custody, and those with multiple sentences for pre-incarceration offenses, with police supervision not exceeding five years or the period covered by the pardon.
These decisions reflect the state’s balanced approach between the firm application of the law and the principles of mercy, justice, and reintegration, coinciding with Egypt’s commemoration of the October War victory.
