In a firm yet compassionate message, the Al-Azhar Global Fatwa Center stated that suicide is considered one of the gravest sins in Islam and that the belief that it brings relief from suffering is a false illusion.

The center explained that Islam places the preservation of life among its highest objectives, strictly prohibiting self-harm while allowing concessions only to protect human life in cases of necessity.

It emphasized that the true believer understands that worldly life is not a place of permanent comfort but a realm of trials and tests, where human beings experience both ease and hardship.

The statement highlighted that hardships often carry hidden wisdom and potential good that may not be immediately understood, reinforcing the Quranic principle that what seems harmful may in fact be beneficial.

Al-Azhar clarified that escaping pain through ending one’s life does not end suffering but transitions the soul into a stage of accountability, where consequences are far greater.

The center also stressed that Islam does not oppose medical or psychological treatment; rather, it encourages seeking help, using available means, and relying on faith and family support to overcome crises.

It concluded that patience, faith, and trust in God transform hardship into reward, and that divine mercy always remains closer than despair.
