Al-Shaarawi Explains the Meaning of “Whoever Reaches Forty, Let Him Prepare for Hell” — A Wake-Up Call for the Soul
Sheikh Mohammed Metwally Al-Shaarawi described the age of forty as a spiritual turning point, warning that neglecting repentance after this stage is a dangerous sign of heedlessness.
In one of his profound reflections, Sheikh Mohammed Metwally Al-Shaarawi spoke about the age of forty — a stage he called the decisive chapter in human life. His striking words echoed deeply:
“Whoever reaches forty, and his good outweighs his evil, yet does not repent — let him prepare himself for Hell.”
At first glance, the statement sounds severe, but Al-Shaarawi’s intent was far from despair — it was a wake-up call to self-accountability. He explained that when a person reaches forty, Allah begins to “watch closely” over His servant — observing whether he uses his wisdom for repentance and reform, or continues down the path of heedlessness despite divine blessings.
If one’s good deeds are abundant but repentance absent, then it is as if he has recognized the truth yet ignored it, a spiritual negligence that hardens the heart.
Al-Shaarawi emphasized that true modesty before Allah — feeling His watchfulness and being ashamed to disobey Him — is what protects a believer from sin and drives him toward sincere repentance.
He described repentance after forty as the most truthful form of repentance, born of life experience and spiritual maturity, when the soul begins to understand the vanity of worldly pursuits and longs for divine peace.
Al-Shaarawi concluded: “Allah never closes the door of repentance as long as the soul still breathes, but those who delay it will one day be returned — unwillingly — when return is no longer possible.”
