Backbiting (Gheebah) and gossip (Nameemah) are serious sins in Islam, considered among the major sins due to their destructive impact on individuals and society. Allah says in the Qur'an: "And do not backbite one another..." [Surah Al-Hujurat: 12].

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "On the night of my ascension, I saw men with copper fingernails scratching their faces and chests. I asked: Who are they? It was said: These are the people who used to eat the flesh of others and violate their honor."

The Prophet ﷺ further explained: "Backbiting is mentioning your brother with something he dislikes." When asked, "What if it’s true?" he replied: "If it is true, you have backbitten him. If not, you have slandered him."

As for gossip, the Prophet ﷺ warned: "A tale-bearer will not enter Paradise," and he described one of the punishments in the grave being for a man who used to spread rumors and cause discord among people.

Therefore, Muslims should avoid such gatherings and, if they find themselves among those who gossip, they must advise them. If they do not stop, then leave their company and do not be a part of their sin.
