The Coptic Orthodox Church is preparing to begin the Nativity Fast, during which Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The fast starts on November 25 and lasts for 43 days until January 7. This sacred period includes 40 days symbolizing the fasting of Prophet Moses before receiving the Ten Commandments, plus three days commemorating the Miracle of Moving the Mokattam Mountain during the time of Saint Simon the Tanner.

The Church divides its fasts into two categories: first-class fasts, which are stricter, and second-class fasts, where the faithful are allowed to eat fish. The second-class fasts include the Nativity Fast, the Apostles’ Fast, and the Fast of the Virgin Mary. The Nativity Fast lasts 43 days, the Apostles’ Fast varies each year depending on Pentecost, and the Fast of the Virgin Mary lasts 15 days in August.

First-class fasts include the Great Lent, lasting 55 days, as well as Wednesday and Friday fasts (except during the Holy Fifty Days), the three-day Fast of Nineveh, and the Paramoun fasts before Christmas and Epiphany, which last one to three days.

The Coptic Orthodox Church emphasizes that fasting is not a burden but a spiritual journey aimed at repentance, inner peace, and preparation for the holy feasts. Through fasting and prayer, believers strengthen their connection with God and renew their spiritual lives.
