Dar Al-Ifta Warns: Profits from Online Betting Are Haram
Dar Al-Ifta of Egypt confirmed that online betting is prohibited in Islam and that any profits gained from it are considered haram money, warning against enjoying or boasting about them.
Sheikh Oweida Osman, Fatwa Secretary at Dar Al-Ifta, explained that anyone who sees a wrong should try to change it through permissible means, citing the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it.” He added that advising others with good counsel and kind words is obligatory and not wrong, even if met with refusal or resentment.
He emphasized that online betting is forbidden in Islam, and any profit gained is considered haram money. Therefore, Muslims should not rejoice or boast about it, as it is a form of gambling prohibited in Islam.
Dr. Ali Gomaa, member of the Senior Scholars at Al-Azhar, explained that gambling is forbidden due to its injustice and risk, citing the Quranic verse: "And do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction." Gambling leads to addiction and the destruction of households, with many losing their possessions and even facing imprisonment.
He added that cyberspace has introduced new forms of gambling, such as electronic games, chat competitions, and online betting, exploiting desires and material motivations. Betting on sports matches is also forbidden; while the sport itself is permissible, wagering on its results is considered haram.
